Educating Future Generations
Yocha-De-He Wintun Academy
It has long been a tradition of the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians to preserve and revitalize the heritage and culture of their people. Each generation is dedicated to preparing the succeeding generation for its role in the community, tribal government, leadership, and life. This tradition is a central and guiding value and a demonstration of the Tribe’s commitment to education.
Since opening in 1998, the Yocha-De-He Wintun Academy has helped students develop self-confidence, responsibility, creativity and integrity while respecting others, the environment and the world. At the curriculum’s core is a shared knowledge of the Tribe’s culture and language, leading to greater community pride and the Tribe’s revitalization.
Education permeates all of the Tribe’s activities and students learn the connection between their studies and everyday life. They are taught about the Tribe’s history, governance and sovereign rights, and about its business enterprises and generous philanthropy.
Honoring tribal history and culture is woven into the daily curriculum. The Yocha-De-He Wintun Academy Board of Trustees and Cultural Renewal Committee work closely together to integrate the Patwin language into all aspects of students’ education. For a young Tribal Member, writing the Patwin language for the first time is a profound experience.
Teachers take a progressive approach by labeling items in the classroom in the Patwin language and using iPods to hear and strengthen the spoken language. The school also houses an extensive collection of books and DVD’s in their library that includes a broad reference section on Native American art, history and culture, instructional and reference material for teachers and the classics. Other unique learning opportunities include partnerships with students at UC Davis and Sacramento State University students as well as the Academy’s speaker series featuring local Native Americans from around California. Speakers engage students with hands-on projects using traditional tools and materials.
The faculty at the Yocha-De-He Wintun Academy is dedicated to students and is sensitive to each child’s style of learning. Teachers are trained to offer a positive learning environment that provides the students the best opportunity to receive a quality education. Teachers are tested throughout the year to ensure they have a solid understanding of the coursework.
The Yocha-De-He Wintun Academy is committed to a path of reaching cultural and linguistic goals for future generations, while giving quality education to all students. In this environment, the students carry the core values of their Tribal heritage into a future full of possibilities.
